Things to Do in Austin Texas with Kids
1. Marvel at the Congress Avenue Bats
One of the most unique experiences in Austin is watching the Congress Avenue bats take flight at sunset. It’s an incredible sight as over a million bats soar into the sky from under the Congress Avenue Bridge. My kids were absolutely amazed, and it’s a perfect outdoor activity to start off your Austin adventure.
2. Dig Into History at the Bullock Texas State History Museum
The Bullock Museum is a treasure trove of Texas history with interactive exhibits that are great for kids. We learned all about the story of Texas, and the kids especially loved the IMAX theatre. It’s both educational and fun, making it a win-win for a family outing.
3. Play and Learn at the Thinkery
The Thinkery, Austin’s children’s museum, is packed with hands-on activities that encourage creativity and curiosity. From science experiments to art projects, it’s designed to make learning fun. My children could spend hours here, and honestly, so could I!
4. Explore the Great Outdoors at Zilker Metropolitan Park
Zilker Park is Austin’s most loved park, and it’s easy to see why. With plenty of space to run around, a miniature train, and canoeing on the lake, it’s the perfect spot for a family picnic or a leisurely day out in nature.
5. Take a Dip in Barton Springs Pool
No visit to Austin is complete without a swim in the refreshing waters of Barton Springs Pool. This natural spring-fed pool is a cool escape from the Texas heat, and my kids loved splashing around. Remember to pack sunscreen and towels!
6. Get Wild at the Austin Zoo
The Austin Zoo is a rescue zoo that provides a sanctuary for a wide variety of animals. It’s smaller than your typical zoo, making it easy to explore with little ones. Feeding the goats was a highlight for my kids, and they learned a lot about animal conservation.
7. Discover Art at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden
This outdoor sculpture garden is a peaceful retreat with works by American sculptor Charles Umlauf. It’s a great way for kids to experience art in nature, and the garden paths are stroller-friendly, making it accessible for families with young children.
8. Step Back in Time at the Pioneer Farms
Pioneer Farms offers a glimpse into Texas’s past with historical sites and hands-on activities. We tried our hand at candle making and explored old Texan homes. It’s a fantastic way to immerse your family in history and have fun doing it.
9. Enjoy Family Fun at the Austin Nature & Science Center
Located in Zilker Park, this center is a haven for young explorers. With interactive exhibits, nature trails, and a dino pit where kids can dig for fossils, it’s a place where nature and learning come together beautifully.
10. Catch a Movie at the Alamo Drafthouse
For a relaxed evening, the Alamo Drafthouse offers family-friendly screenings where you can enjoy a movie and have dinner at the same time. They have a great selection of films, and the unique experience of watching a movie in a cozy, comfortable setting is something my family always looks forward to.
